Top Ten Characteristics of a Multicultural School Environment
Top Ten Characteristics Of A Multicultural School Environment Not all students are the same so they cannot be taught the same way. Their cultures and experiences the way they learn and respond to schooling. Several cultural factors affect the way students behave in a classroom. Each student is different because of physical and mental abilities, gender, ethnicity, race, language, religion, class, sexual orientation, and age (Gollnick and Chin, p. 6). Multicultural school has different characteristics.I think the most important is the composition of the faculty, administration, and other staff accurately reflects the pluralistic composition of the United States (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7) because this will influence a studentââ¬â¢s behavior. The United States has one of the most extensive and diverse educational systems in the world. US population is composed of different races, each with different cultures. I think it would be helpful for a student to study in an environment wherein they value or give respect to different culture. The school environment and the faculty have great impact on studentââ¬â¢s development.Because of this, students will be assured that they will not be discriminated. US has a federal legislation for elementary and secondary schools, No Child Left Behind, requires standardized testing of students to determine how effective a school is in helping students to learn (Gollnick and Chin, p. 12). A school is an institution where students learn the value of respecting others, if the faculty, staff and school administration lacks this, and then it can be hard for students with different culture to study and interact with others at school.Second is that the school curriculum incorporates the contributions of many cultural groups and integrates multiple perspectives throughout it (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7). Some people check on a schoolââ¬â¢s curriculum before they decide on what school they will go. It is important that the school gives val ue to the contributions of many cultural groups. I rank differences in academic achievement levels disappear between males and females, dominant and oppressed group members, and upper-middle-class and low-income students (Gollnick and Chin, p. ) as third because it is also important that students achievement will not be based on their gender, social group or race instead of their knowledge and abilities. With the persistence of racism, poverty, unemployment, and inequality in major social systems such as education, many persons have found it difficult to reconcile daily realities with the publicized egalitarianism that characterizes the public rhetoric (Gollnick and Chin, p. 36).In a multicultural school, students should not experience this, instead, they should experience equality no matter what race, culture, gender or social groups they are involved with. The faculty, administrators, and other staff see themselves as learners enhanced and changed by understanding, affirming, and reflecting cultural diversity (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7). The faculty, administrators, and other staff should be open for changes. They should learn on how to interact on different cultures. They should not be one-sided and be open for some changes because it is a part of life.Teachers and administrators are able to deal with questions of race, inter group relations, and controversial realities on an objective, frank, and professional basis (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7). States and school districts expect new teachers to have proficiencies related to multicultural education by the time they finish a teacher education program (Gollnick and Chin, p. 13). This means, since a teacher is one of the foundation in education, they should be the one to have the skill or proficiency to handle multicultural students. They should use professionalism in dealing with every student no matter what culture they possess. They should be proficient and unbiased in addressing issues raised by students, howeve r making sure that they answer it based on truth. Students are able to use their own cultural resources and voices to develop new skills and to critically explore subject matter (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7). I rank this as seventh because I believed that school is a place where a person develops his own knowledge and skills. The language in which students are taught is one of the most significant issues for schools. Many Americans have become concerned about how best to educate students who are new to the English language and to American culture. As children of all ages and from dozens of language backgrounds seek an education, most schools have adopted some variety of bilingual instruction. Students are taught in their native language until their knowledge of English improves, which is often accomplished through an English as a Second Language program. Cultural differences are treated as differences, rather than as deficiencies that must be addressed in compensatory programs (Gollnick and Chin, p. ). A multicultural school should be fair in giving compensatory benefits for students with different culture. Having different culture should not be a factor in receiving benefits that every student should receive. Instructional materials are free of biases, omissions, and stereotypes (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7). Instructional materials are important in teaching, because these are visualization of what the teacher is teaching. These should be free of biases or stereotyping. Students learn to recognize and confront inequities in school and society (Gollnick and Chin, p. 7).In an environment where there is no discrimination or prejudice, a student will learn how to recognize and confront inequities either in school or society. A multicultural school must teach student on how to address different discrimination. I put this on last because I think discrimination or inequity starts within us. A person must first learn to recognize and confront it inequalities by himself, in ca n be taught on school but experience is a best teacher. BIBLIOGRAPHY Gollnick, Donna M. Legal Framework in Employment Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Legal Framework in Employment - Case Study Example The duration of effect is equally valid, considering that in Romero Insurance Brokers Ltd v Templeton [2013] EWHC 1198 (QB), the High Court validated a 12-month duration for enforcing a restrictive terms in the employment agreement (Meiners, Ringleb, & Edwards, 2011). However, unlike in Monster Vision UK Ltd v McKie [2011] EWHC 3772 (QB) where restrictive clauses seeking to disbar Mr McKie from virtually any business transaction were disallowed by court, restricting Angelaââ¬â¢s use of the unique recipe is reasonably essential in the circumstances to safeguard the Stella Diamondââ¬â¢s single product (Helewitz, 2010). Stella Diamond has expressed reasonable concern that the use of her traditional recipe within the neighbourhood can have damaging impacts on her business. Angela as a senior pastry chef holds a senior position in the business and as such she is very aware of the material business secrets, which can have a detrimental impact on Stella Diamond if the restrictive clause was, disallowed (Meermann, 2014). In Faccenda Chicken Ltd. v. Fowler [1987] IRLR 69 the defendant was an employee of the claimant, serving as the sales manager of the firm selling chickens. His contract of employment was terminated and he then established his own firm selling similar products from refrigerated trucks. He took half of the ten van salesmen of his former employer, their controller, two other office staff and majority of his former employerââ¬â¢s customers. As such, his actions seemed legal because none of the employerââ¬â¢s staffs had restrictive terms in their employment contracts (Kessler, Bass, & Yeargain, 2007). However, in its decision, the court said the respondent owed the appellant an implied duty to act in good faith, specifying that the duty will be breached if an employee uses, in any way, the same list of clients of the former employer upon termination of the employment. General restrictions on ex-employees were however held as unenforceable (Meiners,

Service Learning Reflection Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Service Learning Reflection - Essay Example With the experience and learning I gained, I am now more inspired to do my best and serve as a nurse where ever I am needed. Service Learning at Papakolea Garden Since I was a little kid, I have always seen myself as a nurse. Working in the hospital, wearing the coveted white uniform or scrubs, doing rounds, filling patientsââ¬â¢ charts, handing out medicines, serving as the doctorââ¬â¢s or surgeonââ¬â¢s assistant. However, my view about what a nurse really is, and what a nurse can do was literally broadened after my 10 hour service learning at Papakoleââ¬â¢a Garden. My service learning project was conducted from Saturday, March 09, 2013 to Saturday, April 06, 2013 at the Papakoleââ¬â¢a Community Gardens near the neighborhoodââ¬â¢s schools. The 60ââ¬â¢x80ââ¬â¢ plot of land was planted to promote food sustainability, but as the project continued, the produce kept growing and eventually the harvest may even cater to the local community kitchen. I was merely a nu rsing student when I started working in the garden. I didnââ¬â¢t see the connection of health and gardening right away. But as my time in the garden grew, a new image of a nurse started to form in my head ââ¬â that of the community nurse. A nurse that has all the training and bears all the competencies of a health care professional but has a deep understanding of his/ her own culture, and a proud sense of community. I. What the community taught me about nursing I was born and raised in Kailua, Hawaii and though I donââ¬â¢t have any Hawaiian roots, I can claim that I belong and have a grasp of the stateââ¬â¢s culture. Understanding your patientââ¬â¢s cultural background is essential in providing proper and sensitive care for them. The community of Papakolea is quite unique because in its community and infrastructure planning, the wellness of the kupuna as they age is given much priority and high regard. They even built a kupuna supportive living center to cater to the needs of the aging and their families. There are also schools in the area that have sound health and wellness policies and practices integrated in their curriculum. As is observed, the health and wellness of every generation is deemed important in this community. This initiative of the Papakolea government is congruent with the concept of Ohana or family that is a cultural identity for every person that resides in Hawaii. They have actually dubbed their health program as Ohana-health ââ¬â giving healthcare services with a big emphasis on the importance of families and community relationships as an extension of the family. Being a nurse in this setting taught me about how big of a matter family is to the Papakolea residents and to the Hawaiians as a whole. Since family is central to their wellbeing, then care should be given with the family in mind. In this context, the giving of treatment may also be more effective if the patientââ¬â¢s family is involved as a support system for the patient during treatment. The garden in the community of Papakolea also taught me another integral part of being a nurse. The health of the land reflects the health of its people. The relatively small garden that the community maintains expresses their dedication for wholesome food that is sustainable for everyone in the community. Every resident has access to the community garden and although the produce is mainly allotted for the kupuna, everyone pitches in so that the landââ¬â¢s production is maximized and wholesome food will be available for all. This regard for the environment and the food source

Marketing - Research Paper Example They may become the center of discussions and ridicule among peers, thus making them suffer a psychological blow. Adults on the hand, are not as much affected as children, but suffer all the same in different dimensions that may include financial or even emotional (Basch, 45). The subject of divorce has developed to be a key social factor and plays a central role in human development as witnessed in legal courts, legislative arms and other aspects of law. The reason for such magnitude of importance is that it has risen so much to affect so many families across the globe. The effect sometimes streams to affect different aspects of the development of the country (Basch, 32). Answer for most people is to make divorce difficult to get, but still attainable. That is factored by making it the last option to solving family disputes but not the first. Before committing to divorce, the concerned parties should critically analyze the circumstances under which divorce will subject them to (Basch, 55-56). Compared to women, more men support separation for protection of their social status. They always pay little regard to their children and can consider starting new families and new lives so quickly (Riley, 55). Among an interviewed population of approximately 6000 that included both genders, not divorced and divorced alike, different answers were sustained. The men opted for divorce at a percentage ratio of 50.88: 49.12 of women. More whites view divorce as a solution to irreconcilable marital differences. The factor is fueled by the financial status that enables them to pay alimony and other dues. A white percentage of 79.24, compared to 20.77 of both Hispanic and Blacks favor divorce. Hispanic people do not support, divorce for cultural reasons, whilst the Africans fear divorce because of the inability to meet the alimony fines (Riley, 67). Divorce among the High School Graduates has always been high. Lack of proper education and peer

Thomas Treadwell Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Thomas Treadwell - Essay Example There was a great transformation in American thinking intellectually, socially and politically. Treadwell was a patriot who joined the others in fighting the American loyalists and British to replace the royal government based in Massachusetts. In 1787, the year in which the constitutional convention took place, Thomas Treadwell was a judge of the court of the court of probate. He had been in this position from the beginning of 1778. This convention took place in Philadelphia to address the problems that had been experienced from the time of revolution in governing the United States of America (USC). Many had disputes about the election and composition of the Senate. The bone of contention was the definition of proportional representation. This was the question of inclusion of slaves or other property. There also questions on presidential elections, whether judges should be chosen by executive or by the law, whether to allow abolition of slave trade, and how long the presidential term would be. Many had also argued that presidential power ought to be divided between three persons and that executive power must not be left to one person. Thomas Treadwell was most interested in the constitutional convention of 1787 because at the time he was a judge which was one of the major issues that this convention was to address. The convention would address whether they would be chosen by the state laws or by the president and whoever else that was part of the executive. Treadwell being a specialist in laws would be affected by this convention across the board even as he moved into different posts. Between 1786- 1789 he gave his service in the New York State senate (USC). He viewed the constitutional convention as a platform through which Americans would come up with new laws to govern there nationââ¬â¢s operations. Treadwell was actively part of the delegation which first agreed on the principles of the convention. This
